What is auto insurance? Our low cost auto insurance protects you against financial loss if you have an accident. It is a
contract signed by you and Calico Insurance Services, as your auto insurance agent. You agree to pay the auto
insurance rates, or premium, and we agree to pay your losses as defined in your auto insurance policy. Our auto
insurance companies provides property, liability and medical coverage: Property coverage pays for damage to or theft of
your car. Liability coverage pays for your legal responsibility to others for bodily injury or property damage. Medical
coverage pays for the cost of treating injuries, rehabilitation and, at times, lost wages and funeral expenses. Calico’s
auto insurance policy is comprised of six different kinds of coverage (add link). Most states require you to buy some, but
not all, of these from your auto insurance agent. If you're financing a car, your lender may also have requirements on
your auto insurance rate. Most auto insurance policies are for six months to a year. We will electronically report the
information on your auto insurance policy to the “DMV” California Department of Motor Vehicles. The state will suspend
your registration for failure to maintain financial responsibility. We will notify you by mail when it’s time to renew your
policy and to pay your premium.
What is covered by a basic auto insurance policy? When Calico Insurance Services gives you its low cost auto
insurance quote for a policy, it may include six different areas of coverage in order that you have the best auto insurance
coverage. Each coverage is priced separately.
1. Bodily Injury Liability: This auto insurance coverage applies to injuries that you, the designated driver or policyholder,
cause to someone else. You, as well as any family members listed on the policy, are also covered when driving someone
else’s car with their permission. It’s very important to have enough liability insurance coverage, because you may be
sued for a large sum of money if involved in a serious accident. Definitely consider buying more than the state-required
auto insurance minimum to protect assets such as your home and savings. The state of California stipulates that for
residents to legally drive their vehicles on California roads, they must prove that they can cover all damages―take
financial responsibility―in the event of an auto accident. In most cases, that means maintaining liability auto insurance.
2. Medical Payments or Personal Injury Protection (PIP). This insurance with Calico Insurance Services covers the
treatment of injuries to the driver and passengers of the policyholder's car. At its broadest, PIP can cover medical
payments, lost wages and the cost of replacing services normally performed by someone injured in an auto accident. It
may also cover funeral costs.
3. Property Damage Liability. We provide this low cost insurance coverage to pay for damage you (or someone driving
the car with your permission) may cause to someone else's property. Usually, this means damage to someone else’s car,
but it also includes damage to lamp posts, telephone poles, fences, buildings or other structures your car hit.
4. Collision. As your auto insurance agent, Calico Insurance Services provides this coverage to pay for damage to your
car resulting from a collision with another car or object and/or as a result of flipping over. Collision auto insurance also
covers damage caused by potholes. Collision coverage is generally sold with a deductible of $250 to $1,000: The higher
your deductible on your auto insurance, the lower your premium. Even if you are at fault for the accident, your collision
coverage will reimburse you for the costs of repairing your car, minus the deductible. If you're not at fault, as your auto
insurance agent, we may try to recover the amount paid you from the other driver’s auto insurance company. If we are
successful, you'll also be reimbursed for the deductible.
5. Comprehensive. This auto insurance coverage reimburses you for loss due to theft or damage caused by something
other than a collision with another car or object, such as fire, falling objects, missiles, explosion, earthquake, windstorm,
hail, flood, vandalism, riot, or contact with animals such as birds or deer. Comprehensive auto insurance is usually sold
with a $100 to $1,000 deductible, though you may want to opt for a higher deductible as a way of lowering your premium.
Our low cost auto insurance for comprehensive coverage will also reimburse you if your windshield is cracked or
shattered. Some companies offer glass coverage with or without a deductible.
6. Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage. With our top auto insurance coverage, insurance company
represented by Calico Insurance Services will reimburse you, a member of your family, or a designated driver if one of
you is hit by an uninsured or hit-and-run driver. Underinsured motorist coverage comes into play when an at-fault driver
has insufficient insurance to pay for your total loss. Our low cost auto insurance coverage will also protect you if you are
hit as a pedestrian.
For the State of California, the minimum liability auto insurance coverage is: $15,000 for injury/death to one person;
$30,000 for injury/death to more than one person; and $5,000 for damage to property. Once we agree on an auto
insurance rate and policy coverage, we will give you a document or identification card. The California Department of
Motor Vehicles “DMV” requires that you keep this proof of auto insurance in your vehicle no matter where you go. You
might need to present it if a police officer pulls you over or if you are involved in an accident. You could receive a traffic
ticket of $1,000 or more if you cannot provide evidence of financial responsibility. If you are ticketed you’ll have to go
through the court system and not the DMV to clear such a citation.
What determines the price of my auto insurance policy? There are many factors that influence the price you pay for auto
insurance. At Calico Insurance Services, we will do our best to provide you with the best auto insurance rates depending
on your driving experience. The average American driver spends about $850 a year on auto insurance. Your premium
may be higher or lower, depending on:
1. Your driving record. The better your record, the lower will be your auto insurance premium. If you've had accidents or
serious traffic violations, you will pay more for auto insurance than if you have a clean driving record. You may also pay
more if you haven't been insured for a number of years.
2. The number of miles you drive each year. The more miles you drive, the more chance for accidents. If you drive a
lower than average number of miles per year, less than 10,000, you will pay less for your auto insurance. For instance,
we give discounts to policyholders who carpool.
3. Where you live. When providing you with an auto insurance quote in our office or a free online auto insurance quote,
we need to look at local trends, such as the number of accidents, car thefts and lawsuits, as well as the cost of medical
care and car repair.
4. Your age. In general, mature drivers have fewer accidents than less experienced drivers, particularly teenagers. So
your auto insurance will most likely be more if teenagers or young people below age 25 drive your car.
5. The car you drive. Some cars cost more for auto insure than others. Variables include the likelihood of theft, the cost
of the car, the cost of repairs, and the car’s overall safety record.
6. The amount of auto insurance coverage. Of course, like anything else, the more coverage you have, the more you
pay. However, Calico Insurance Services always looks for ways to give you the top discount auto insurance.
7. The auto insurance deductible: An insurance deductible is the amount you are required and obligated to pay to
collision repair facility as agreed with your auto insurance agency. You determine the deductible, which usually applied to
comprehensive and collision coverage. Generally the lower the deductible, the higher the auto insurance premium will
be. Examples: After John filed his auto insurance claim, his insurance agent said that they would cover the entire cost of
replacing the door of his car after he contributed his insurance deductible of $1,000.
What happens with my auto insurance if I lease a car? When leasing a car, you still need to buy your own auto
insurance policy. The auto dealer or bank that is financing the car will require you to buy collision and comprehensive
coverage. Most finance companies will require you to buy more coverage then State of California requires. Collision auto
insurance covers the damage to the car from an accident with another automobile or object. Comprehensive auto
insurance covers a loss that is caused by something other than a collision with another car or object, such as a fire or
theft or collision with a deer. The leasing company may also require totaled “gap” auto insurance. This refers to the fact
that if you have an accident, and your leased car is damaged beyond repair or totaled there's likely to be a difference
between the amount that you still owe the auto dealer and the check that you get from the insurance company
represented by Calico Insurance Services. That's because our auto insurance check is based on the car's actual cash
value that takes depreciation into account. The difference between the two amounts is known as the “gap.” On a leased
car, our gap auto insurance is generally rolled into the lease payments. You don't actually buy a gap policy. Generally,
the auto dealer buys a master policy from an auto insurance company to cover all the cars it leases and charges you for
a “gap waiver.” In other words, if your leased car is totaled, you won't have to pay the dealer the gap amount. Check with
the auto dealer when leasing your car. If you have an auto loan rather than a lease, you may want to buy gap insurance
to protect yourself from having to come up with the gap amount if your car is totaled before you've finished paying for it.
